The American Psychological Association revealed that “30 percent of teens reported feeling sad or depressed because of stress, and 31 percent felt overwhelmed; another 36 percent said that stress makes them tired and 23 percent said they’ve skipped meals because of it” (Aleccia). Although teenagers face stress in many different ways, whether it is because of popularity, social media, and the clothes they wear, many studies are beginning to find that in today’s schools, the main source of this teenage crisis is school. To help students manage the emotional, physical, and social stress associated with academics, the public school system should begin to implement a smaller student-to-counselor ratio, smaller class sizes, and a 90-minute study hall period.
