Leaders: Take decisive, courageous steps to help homeless citizens. Stop saying you care, and then turn away when outsiders buy up buildings, displace citizens and leave them homeless.
As the worst of winter 2020 approaches, Charlotte tent cities remain. We implore leaders to take decisive action to protect these vulnerable people. Please, confront and own a problem which has been a stain on Mecklenburg County long before COVID-19. Charities are trying, but their efforts are piecemeal because they don’t have a supportive platform. Their efforts, instead offer those in power a false sense of accomplishment - a substitute for actual problem solving.
County and city leaders have run on political platforms which put people over profits. Yet, they practice avoidance when confronted to solve the same issues which got them voted into office.
Ask faith leader and homeless advocates for innovative ideas and support those ideas with a platform of collaboration and funding.
Stop merely reacting to questions. Use the power of your office to facilitate actionable solutions.
This is why we voted you into office. This also why we should vote you out if this doesn’t change.
