Reproductive Rights Coalition started this petition to Charlotte City Council and

In light of everything that has happened since the City Council made its decision to host the 2020 Republican National Convention, we believe that the City's invitation should be withdrawn in the interest of public safety.

The rally this month in Greenville, NC in which Trump followers chanted "Send her back," referring to Congresswoman Ilhan Omar, a refugee from Somalia, followed the President’s repeated hostile public statements about four Democratic House Members who are all women of color. This event demonstrated that the President’s behavior has a negative influence on NC community and culture. Even without the RNC Convention, Charlotte has been struggling to heal deep-seated racial divides. Segregated housing and schools, a rising murder rate, police shootings and a stubborn lack of social mobility present our city government with daily challenges. At best, hosting the RNC will likely undo the City's hard work; at worst, we could see terrible violence.  According to research published in the Washington Post on March 22, 2019, hate crimes increased by 226% in counties that hosted a Trump rally in 2016.    https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2019/03/22/trumps-rhetoric-does-inspire-more-hate-crimes/?noredirect=on&utm_term=.ef1b90c7929b#click=https://t.co/bYXsN60xzH

The President’s statements about abortion should also be deeply concerning for a city that has become a national battleground between clinics and protesters. NC politician Dan Bishop and others have parroted Mr. Trump’s claims that Democrats support “infanticide.” All too often, this kind of irresponsible, inaccurate and extreme language leads to violence against abortion clinics that provide legal and necessary healthcare, as well as their staff, patients and supporters.  http://nymag.com/intelligencer/2019/02/republicans-extreme-abortion-rhetoric-wrong-and-dangerous.html

For these reasons, RRC believes that it is incumbent on City Council to put the health and safety of its citizens first and withdraw its agreement to host the RNC.
