American Sign Language is used by approximately 250,000-500,000 individuals in both the United States and Canada. Learning Sign Language is often only associated as being used to communicate with individuals who are hard of hearing, but in actuality there are a large amount of other reasons why knowing and understanding even basic signs can be important or beneficial. The World Health Organization reports that by 2050, 1 out of every 10 people will have some form of disabling hearing loss. Increasing children's exposure to ASL will be beneficial because based on the statistics, they will be more likely to meet someone who communicates with ASL; even the introduction of simple signs will let them better communicate, and understand their peers.

While Massachusetts does recognize ASL as a language, and towns may offer it in place of Spanish; only 33 public high schools in ALL of Massachusetts offer it. The purpose of this petition is to bring awareness of the importance of teaching ASL, and to ask Governor Baker to require high schools to offer at least one class of ASL.
