This 2019-2020 school year has added a new rule: No cell phones allowed on your person. And its been controversial, within the staff, and most definitely with the students. But why? Aren't there more pros than cons? "Because cell phones are the biggest distraction in the classroom."

While, yes, this is true, but it's definitely not the only one. Like, for example, one of the biggest ones here are our Chromebooks. They've added filters to prevent the use of games and other media, but you can still get on these sites, since people do this, are they going to get rid of them? A lot of people draw in class and pass notes, nothing will stop students from escaping what they consider boring. It's not the cell phones that are the problem, it's our inherent human nature to do something that's more interesting than the current activities they're involved in; like school. So, we find distractions(I.e. Cell phones, Chromebooks, and drawing) to help us get through the class. If the cell phone rule stays the same, people are going to find a different distraction from the work, because the people willing to be on their cell phones all class obviously weren't planning on doing the work with or without them in the first place. So, adding this rule just makes students and parents upset, and there's no true benefit. And plus, cell phones are still useful in the classroom. Music (while it can be distracting to fellow classmates when too loud) have been proven to help students perform better, according to Florida National University (https://www.fnu.edu/benefits-studying-music/

And what about family emergencies? Sure, the parents can call the office, but since no student has cell phones to contact, every parent is going to have to call the office in order to pass on this personal information--as if the office staff doesn't have enough calls already. Why add extra, unnecessary work on them and possibly upset the parents of the students?

In conclusion, I personally don't believe that we shouldn't be able to have cellphones on our person. I believe it's pointless, and will cause extra hassle on teachers and office staff alike, and that cell phones have a certain benefit in the classroom that older people may not exactly understand (i.e. Music).

Sincerely, Aikas Speed
