Removal of hostile architecture on downtown Charleston fountain
The rotary club in historic downtown Charleston, SC built a fountain in 2002 on the famous corner of King St and Calhoun St in Marion Square.
In February 2020, bronze animal sculptures of native Lowcountry wildlife were added- a great and beautiful addition named “The Gathering Place”.
Months later in July, bronze bars were added to the benches making it difficult for people to sit for a variety of reasons: ex. the spacing and heating of the metal in the 90° heat/sun.
Quotes are written on the benches around the fountain such as, “Will it be beneficial to all concerned?”. Some also use this as an argument against the hostility towards homeless people using the benches.
The installation of these bars is not necessary and they should be removed to benefit all of the public.
