Stop More Accidents and Deaths on Bohicket Road!

We support sensible growth on Johns Island, but this isn't sensible or safe!

The Charleston County Council may approve a zoning change, in August, that could result in 2919 more cars moving on and off Bohicket Road, causing seriously dangerous traffic situations. We need the Council to hear our voices and demand that this property NOT be rezoned!

The Frattone Trust, out of California, wants to build a 6000 sq foot convenience store, with fuel service islands, accessory eating area and a 7000 sq foot office building at 2729 Bohicket Rd on Johns Island. The Zoning and Planning online document, page 89, states that 2,919 cars, or an average of 3 per minute during peak periods, would be coming and going in an area where people drive 50-70 mph over a long curvy stretch of two lane road. Anyone who commutes (many people use this road to work on Kiawah and Seabook Islands), who vacations (this is a huge tourist area with limited roadways) or lives on Johns Island will be affected. We NEED your help. If you live, work or play on Johns Island, please sign our petition to prevent the rezoning of this property to build this convenience store and gas station covering two acres!

A single accident on Bohicket Road affects hundreds of people on any given day.  This is a residential area, with almost no businesses between the noted lot and Betsy Kerrison Parkway. This two lane, oak-lined road is already cited by the DOT as one of the most dangerous roads in SC. Two Grand oaks block the view of people who would be entering or leaving the property. At times, we pass our own driveway and turn around further down the road because people are traveling so fast and so close to us that we can't make the turn safely. A development of this scope and size seriously encroaches on our homes and farms, and our quality of life.  We already have so many accidents, many with fatalities, on this stretch of road. Expanded business hours means lights, noise and traffic at late hours in a residential area. We also have concerns about soil quality, with a gas station within feet of our homes, since many of us grow our own food in this rural area. There just aren't any positives about this construction except for the Frattone Trust in California who will reap all of the financial rewards while Johns Island will bear the costs, and even the deaths, of having this store in such a dangerous location.

We are willing to support a small office park or another business that does not so seriously affect traffic and the quality of life for those who drive, live and work on Johns Island. Signing this petition could save lives and will certainly prevent the community from becoming a haven for outside interests who don't care about the people who live and work there.

We are on a tight deadline...we need you to respond today! The County Council meets soon to vote and if they don't know how much we care, this will be the first of many wrongs against our community.
