Oakvile Plantation (now River Run) is up for review- AGAIN!
Oct 6, 2019 —
After hurricanes, the Dutch Dialogues, and all Mayor Tecklenburg has said about flooding, sea level rise, and the City changing its ways, Oakville Plantation, now called River Run in its new and expanded form, is back on the agenda of three important meetings this week. This development is a worst-case scenario for Johns Island and must be stopped. It runs contrary to the Dutch Dialogues and the Johns Island Community Plan. It will put innocent buyers at risk, threatens neighboring communities, and is a moral hazard that will cause problems and cost us all money for years to come. Don't let it be business as usual for the City of Charleston.
If built, the 126-acre (with at least 239 units) PUD will stretch from River Road to the Stono River cutting across marshlands and a major section of Burden Creek. It will be built on low land that is exposed to storm surge and rainwater flooding. This massive Fill-and-Build PUD at the mouth of Burden Creek will block the flow of flood waters out of Burden Creek placing neighboring communities and much of the Burden Creek Basin at increased flood risk. Oh, and it will also add about 2270 vehicle trips per day to River Road.
We must show the City of Charleston that there is strong, widespread opposition to River Run and other Fill-and-Build developments by attending these meetings. I know they are scheduled during working hours or at times when we just can’t seem to break free. BUT we must attend or suffer the consequences. There is no other choice. Please arrange you schedules. Please do what is necessary to voice your opposition.
Real Estate Committee, Tuesday October 8th, 3:30, City Hall, 80 Broad, First Floor Conference Room. This is where they may remove the deferral that has been in place.
City Council City Hall, Tuesday, October 8th,5:00 pm City Hall, 80 Broad Street.
Even though the items are marked DEFERRED on the published agenda, Council could amend the agenda at the meeting to delete the deferral and proceed. City Council must vote no on the annexation of component properties and the PUD concept of River Run.
Technical Review Committee. Thursday, October 10th, 9:00 am, Buildings Inspection Conference Room, 1st Floor, 2 George Street
This is where the developer reveals their plans. If River Run passes the TRC it is all but a done deal. We need to show up, take video, audio, and photos of the people and all plans. We need to show the TRC members that there is strong and controversial opposition. They have the power to reject or defer.
Please, Please and triple Please help by attending these meetings. We need to fill the meeting rooms. Your presence will make a difference.
