U.S. Lawmakers, Provide Necessary Aid to Restore PR Infrastructure

Puerto Rico is in desperate need of federal assistance, basic supplies, repair crews, and debt relief. The federal government has the resources to mobilize money and a larger response force to repair and rebuild the island.
The devastating effects of Hurricane Maria will be long-lasting, unless the U.S. government mobilizes to help the more than 3.4 million Puerto Rican U.S. American citizens, many who have lost their homes, those residing near the faltering Guajataca dam who may lose everything, some who have lost their lives. It is difficult to survey the exact death toll, given the lack of communications.
Several Puerto Rican legislators such as Jennifer Gonzalez (PR), Luis Gutierrez (IL), and Jose Serrano (NY) are asking Congress to approve additional aid. Governor Andrew Cuomo has already pledged state aid effort after visiting Puerto Rico on Friday, September 22, and has issued a call to increase relief efforts for Puerto Rico. They cannot do it alone.
There is a large Puerto Rican constituency waiting for your support during a time of uncertainty and despair. Many of us have not been able to communicate with our loved ones on the archipelago, and are fearful about the effects of the already ongoing humanitarian crisis that has been caused due to the lack of urgency in the U.S. government's response.
We urge you to take a stand in support of Puerto Rico.
What you can do:
- Deploy more personnel to aid in repair of infrastructure
- Support efforts to repeal the Jones Act
- Follow up with debt relief efforts
