Raise awareness regarding the growing opioid crisis

The opioid epidemic crisis is becoming more prevalent in the United States especially among young people. According to the Daily News, "New York CIty's Opioid Crisis Seeps into Public Schools as Drug Counselors see Upstick in Student Addicts.", there has been an increase of 46% from 2015 in suspected opioid deaths last year. The Realization Center, a substance treatment clinic in NYC reports they are treating twice as many high school kids compared to a couple of years back, from schools like Laguardia, John Dewey, & Bronx Science. They interviewed a 16 year old student that reported one-third of her high school classmates experimented with xanax as well as other prescription drugs. She also reported how accessible obtaining these drugs are, whether purchasing them from an on-line web site or other students at school. The article discussed an increased effort in incorporating prescription drugs and opioids in anti-drug lessons, as well as special educators that offer drug awareness lessons in school. However, there are still schools who remain without anti-drug counselors and educators, and in my opinion speaks to the lack of drug prevention efforts needed for this growing issue.
I feel there needs to be an undertaking on drug prevention education, with a focus on adolescence being that they're not only exposed to these drugs at such an early age but they’re so easily accessible. The Trump administration recently declared the opioid crisis a public health emergency, due to the rapidly escalating epidemic of drug use. I feel we not only need additional methods on drug-prevention education but more research in regards to opioid use. Also, schools should have access to naloxone, medication designed to rapidly reverse opioid overdose, to have readily available on schools and campuses. This petition is requesting more funding from the government to make this campaign on drug prevention possible, but also addresses our commitment and investment to our youth.
