Nicholas Li started this petition to Senator Charles E. Schumer and

Filibustering is a practice in the US senate that is used mainly to prevent the voting and eventual passing of a bill. This procedural wall completely discourages bipartisanship in an already vastly divided Washington. The nature of filibustering is inherently undemocratic nor is it actually protected by the US constitution. Allowing legislation to pass with a simple majority is democratic and should not be obstructed by a loophole in legislative debate limits.  Furthermore, the Founding Fathers themselves proved to be worrisome about minority rule and thus specifically envisioned the Senate to be a majoritarian sector of the government. Both the Republican and Democratic parties have vigorously used the filibuster to block landmark legislation, constantly creating deadlock within the Senate. This practice is both feeble to politicians but the American people as well. The framework of the filibuster often allows for those conducting the filibuster to participate in a very childish and unproductive way. Examples include Louisiana Senator Huey Long teaching a cooking course on Bayou delicacies to Alfonse D’Amato reading the phonebook of the district of Columbia. Funny right? Sure. But NONE of this is democratic in nature and has no place in the US senate. To end, I present you a quote from the great Alexander Hamilton: "If a pertinacious minority can control the opinion of a majority...[the government's] situation must always savor of weakness, sometimes border upon anarchy."

In order to preserve the democratic values for current and future generations, we must ABOLISH THE FILIBUSTER.
