San Jose Mercury News, 3/14/17: In his 92 years, Paul Mayer has survived World War II. He’s battled skin cancer and congestive heart failure. But it’s the fight to keep his apartment of 44 years that he fears he’ll lose. He has until April 4 to clear out.(edit, now July)
“I’d be willing to pay more rent if we could work something out with them,” Mayer said on a recent afternoon, surrounded by 1970s furniture and family photos inside his studio apartment on Magliocco Avenue. “But they didn’t even bother. They just said, ‘Get out.’ And I don’t know where to go.”
Peggy, the owner of Paul's building, lied and said she was going to evict everyone in order to renovate the building. In truth, she's evicting all the rent controlled tenants and moving in formerly homeless veterans who pay about $1,700/mo via vouchers AND she gets a $1,500 signing bonus per vet. She's evicted at least 50 people and doing this at three other properties (so far)--one where the rent's about $2,600.
Paul's 92 and a WWll veteran. He should be allowed to stay where he is until he passes. Paul shouldn't be punished for Peggy's greed and Peggy should not be rewarded for her greed.
Tell Councilmember Chappie Jones that you want Paul to stay where he is! Tell Peggy her greed isn't welcome in San Jose or the Bay Area.
