End the Use of Proctoring Software @ Chapman University

End the Use of Proctoring Software @ Chapman University
The Issue
As a student at Chapman University I would like to have a say about what sort of software I will or will not download on my PERSONAL device. Chapman University has chosen to bypass any student privacy concerns and incorporate the use of third party software to deter cheating as classes are now being taught through remote learning. The aim of this petition is to raise awareness to Chapman University faculty and staff that students are not comfortable being forced to download software that inhibits the use of our personal devices and collects our data. I would also like to add that the amount of stress and anxiety students face simply due to the fear of something going wrong while using the software must be considered. Particularly, given the circumstances that any number of possible situations may arise with so many students being forced back home with family members, non-ideal testing environments, and spotty internet connections. I also added links to articles related to criticisms of this type of software.
Chapman claims that the approved software does not collect your data. Let’s read the fine print.
In particular when downloading Lockdown Browser Responds, the Terms of Service agreement that you must accept in order to use the software states:
Data Collection
Respondus collects data to operate effectively and to strive to provide you with the best experience with LockDown Browser. You provide some of this data directly, such as when you contact us for support. Some data is obtained by recording how you interact with LockDown Browser by, for example, receiving error reports or usage data from software running on your device. Some data is obtained by how you interact with the assessment delivery system, such as the amount of time spent answering a question.

Many universities have already banned or petitions exist that support the ban of these programs so why is Chapman still forcing us to use it? The list of schools to have banned or raise concerns about online proctoring software and services include: UC Berkley, UCSB, CSUF, Cal Poly Pomona, Georgia Tech, North Carolina State University, UCF, University of Ottawa, and likely many more. We should be given the option to use a CHAPMAN provided laptop (tuition $$$$) or be given an alternate assignment that does not infringe on our right to privacy.
Chapman University has baselessly stated that students are not concerned about their privacy and have no issue with these programs. Please help protect our privacy by signing this petition and being more vocal about your privacy and security concerns with these programs.
