On May 25, 2020, George Floyd was brutally murdered by a Minneapolis police officer.
Since then, the entire nation has entered a state of outrage over the unnecessary and unjust murder of Floyd and countless other black men and women. A week of protests across all 50 states and millions of dollars in donations—this is how our country has responded.

We the students of Chapman University believe that it is of extreme importance that we use our collective power as a university to make a difference in this challenging time and join the nation in inciting change. It is crucial we act now and that we act in ways that will bring about visible and dramatic change both on and off campus.

In our efforts to contribute and make tangible change, students from Chapman and other universities across the nation have been extending themselves in any way possible—most of these financial. We ask that Chapman University do the same.

As of June 3, Chapman University has made two public statements via email promising virtual conversations and a commitment to diversity and inclusion. This is a good start, but it is not enough.

We ask that Chapman University join its students in vocally supporting its black community by continuing to invest in on-campus resources designed to cultivate empathy and engagement in our diverse society, and most importantly, by donating.

Funding is a non-disputable factor in how we move forward, and we are calling on YOU, a reputable institution of higher learning, to show us that you CARE enough to practice what you preach. We know we have the resources ( to do it. What’s left is your willingness to show us that you believe in what our future can be.

We want to be the university that did something. Please follow the lead of your students and consider making a donation to the following organizations, all of which directly coincide with Chapman University’s mission statement, core values and commitments as an institution.

“We strive to become multidimensional, original thinkers — the kind of people who flourish in a challenging world. The kind of people who rise to every occasion. The kind of people who can accomplish anything imaginable.” - Chapman University’s website

Black Lives Matter:

- This charity supports ending state-sanctioned violence and ending white supremacy, two causes that directly tie into Chapman’s promise to foster diversity on and off campus. It also supports Chapman in its mission to create a linkage between a life of learning, and service and vital interaction of the university with our wider communities.

Reclaim The Block:

- This coalition advocates for and invests in community-led safety initiatives. This ties directly into Chapman’s missions to foster safe and inclusive learning environments.

NAACP Legal Fund:

- This non-profit organization works to win landmark legal battles, protect voters across the nation, and advance the cause of racial justice, equality, and an inclusive society. This coincides with Chapman’s mission to address multicultural issues, help students develop a global and diverse perspective, and foster vital interaction of the university with our wider communities.

Black Visions Collective:

- This organization believes in a future where all Black people have autonomy, safety is community-led, and we are in right relationship within our ecosystems. This affirms Chapman’s mission to foster a diverse community and create a campus environment that is welcoming and inclusive.

Campaign Zero:

- This organization utilizes research-based policy solutions to end police brutality in the U.S. This directly ties into Chapman’s mission to contribute new knowledge to the world, foster a safe learning environment for its diverse student body, and encourages a vital interaction with the wider communities outside the university.

These are only a few non-profit organizations and charities that coincide with Chapman’s mission statements and values. Much more are in need of financial support. If Chapman cannot donate, we call on you President Struppa and other high-paid faculty to make a donation.

And please keep in mind the following words:

“We can only live up to the promise of preparing our students for a global society if we welcome the world onto this campus.

I look forward to working with each of you to bring this ambitious new vision to life.

When the world asks me what Chapman can do, I answer: Anything Imaginable.” - President Struppa
