Students at Chapel Hill High and other CHCCS schools are sacrificing much of the social aspects of high school and associated freedoms to keep our community safe. However, students at outdoor sporting events are allowed to remove masks after they reach the stands of a sporting event.
This past week, we have seen consequences from this rule. Over a hundred students packed shoulder to shoulder in the bleachers of a football game to support our school. This is completely unsafe, and generally irresponsible both on the students that attended the game, and the school board that allowed this to happen. It is completely wrong to not allow extracurricular and enriching clubs to happen, whilst also letting students go without masks at sporting events.

The best way we can support our school and district is by keeping students safe and ensuring that we get to stay in school this year. It’s time to call on CHHS and CHCCS to require masks at outdoor events when social distancing is not taking place. It is our responsibility to keep schools open, but it is also our responsibility to bring up guidelines that are not working.
