The start and end times of a high school may be the most influential part of a high schooler's day-to-day life. And while it's important to spend an adequate amount of time at school, waking up as early as 6:00 to 6:30 just to get to a school that starts at 7:25 in the morning is unnecessary. Every day, Waubonsie students lose sleep and force themselves awake despite their human nature. Time management is a key lesson that needs to be learned, however, the current schedule is poorly designed and unfit for adolescents.

And this isn't even a new concept. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, middle and high schools need to start at 8:30 am or later in order to give students the opportunity to get enough sleep. The side effects of this lack of sleep are genuinely affecting a lot of students, myself included. And some say stuff like "but adults can do it, why can't the students", but that's the thing. They aren't the same. Students are falling asleep in the middle of classes, and when they are awake, they're basically zombies. And if you choose to ignore all of that, think about how many students are driving to and from school, half asleep, putting everyone at risk. These start and stop times don't help anyone, and they need to be changed, this isn't worth it.

But those are just problems with the current schedule, what would be a better one? A better schedule would start at 8:30 am and end at 3:30 pm. That way, the schedule still starts and ends early, but this time, at a reasonable time. It may seem like a dramatic change, and it is, but it's a necessary one, for the better of the students. So sign this petition and help a student.
