Change Upper Township School District's bus routes and keep our kids safe
0 have signed. Let’s get to 200!
We, the parents and citizens Upper Township and Ocean City School District, ask that all bus stops on Route 9 & 50 be rerouted to the nearest side street or safest loading area. In light of the recent tragic accident where a motorist passed a stopped bus and struck one of our children crossing Route 9, we feel now is the time for swift action.
According to the US Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, "From 2003 to 2012, 174 school-age children died in school-transportation-related crashes... 119 [of them] were pedestrians." Additionally, according to the Bus Industry Association, drivers passing stopped school buses with flashing lights occurs over 70,000 times a day.
We would like to keep our children safe from becoming one of the statistics. In previous years, the school district had bus routes that avoided stopping on Upper Township's busiest roads (Routes 9 and 50), but these were rerouted due to budget cuts. We are asking you to reinstate this safety measure for the sake of our children. You cannot put a price on a life. Ultimately, the safety of our children is the school district's number one responsibility. Please protect our children. Thank you for your consideration.
