Change the uniform policy! (cshs)
The new crack down on uniform policy is unbelievable! Churchlands senior high school prides it's self on putting our children's mental health first yet scolds them for wanting to express themselves. Why is self expression so important in a learning environment? Well, it's not just a learning environment! A vast amount of a students social life is spent inside school, hence why school needs to be a safe place to mingle and express themselves in a safe way. What actually defines the difference between a nose stud and a earlobe stud? A student coming to school one day with a nose stud doesn't change them as a person, it does not effect the students work ethic and effort in the slightest! What is the root of this rule? Is it fear? I guarantee you parents are not going to start rapidly pulling their children out of school because some students choose to have facial piercings, or mildly coloured hair. Like mentioned above! Our students expressing themselves in a safe way is vital! It's not only a part of being a teenager, it also prevents them from resorting to unhealthy forms of self expression like the ever at large vape and marijiuana problem at our school. I understand the importance of uniform as it creates a sense of equality and unity however the compromise of evolving with our times and being able to relate to your students and how they express themselves is important! We cannot stand still and stick to the same rules we grew up with.
In conclusion, we propose that the new standard around uniform policy, following other school rules around the country and compromising, would be;
-mild coloured hair is allowed (no neon colours and/or Mohawks, Spikes and such)
-flat minimal facial piercings (no spikes)
Only our principle and the school board has the power to make a change. If some sort of change doesn't change, students will continue to feel embarrassed and miserable at our school.
