Change the Racist Name of Washington’s Football Team

National Museum of the American Indian started this petition to National Football League Commissioner Roger Goodell

Americans agree: Bigotry has no place in professional sports.

But despite growing public opposition to the blatant racism of the Washington "Redskins" name, the team's owners and the National Football League's leadership have refused to change it. It's time to end this assault on the dignity of Native Americans, and change the racist name of Washington’s Football team

The growing movement to change the team's name includes dozens of Native American tribes and organizations, as well as the National Museum of the American Indian, which works to replace hurtful stereotypes with the celebration of real native peoples and their cultures. Many prominent sports, civic and cultural figures have also joined the cause, and more and more media outlets have stopped using the team's offensive name. And the United States Patent and Trademark Office has cancelled the team's trademark registration.

But despite this increasing pressure, the team's owners are digging in their heels, claiming that the slur "Redskins" actually honors Native Americans. And rather than use his authority to combat this denigration, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell is echoing these absurd claims.

It's time to convince Commissioner Goodell to erase this disgraceful stain on the NFL –– by forcing Washington's owners to change the team's name. Sign the petition today!
