Trigger warning: racism

I'm very proud to be in the "Whiteaker" neighborhood. It's a really lovely community of creative and caring individuals and families, featuring some of Eugene's hidden gems and favorite businesses. But John Whiteaker was a terrible person. He vocally supported slavery. He openly espoused racist views. He advocated the beating of slaves who wanted to move to Oregon. Moreover, his views on slavery were in the minority in Oregon, and he was ousted from the Governorship in part because of his pro-slavery views. Let's change the name of the neighborhood to reflect that John Whiteaker's hateful views don't reflect the current community or our hopes for the future. (We plan to gather signatures and then make a presentation to the Eugene City Council, since the name of the "Whiteaker" neighborhood is codified in city laws.
