Why this petition matters

Started by Lea Bogwald

In Oakland New Jersey, USA, the highschool Indian Hills still uses a native American person as their mascot although they are technically called, "the braves." The school also uses the outdated and offensive term "Indian" when referring to natives. It's 2022 and it's about time for a change. The goal of this petition is to get as many signatures as possible and show it to the Indian Hills school board, so they will change their name and mascot as soon as possible! Using Natives as mascots contributes to negative stereotyping and takes away opportunities for actual native people to portray positive and respectful images of their culture.  States such as Maine, Washington and Colorado have acknowledged the issue behind native mascots in public schools and they are now banned. In those states, mascots known as "The Braves", "Indians", "Warriors", "Cheifs", and "Red Sk*s". The term Indian groups Natives with actual Indian people from India. The term Indian was given to them by the white people who colonized their land and it strips natives of their own identity. Let's all do something about it.
