As a young muslim woman who wishes to express her religion through wearing a hijab, what choices do I have?

In our school, we are made to wear confidence diminishing pull-on hijabs by a school system that is not understanding of our religious beliefs. I believe that we should have the right to wear any hijab that makes us feel comfortable in our own skin.

Hijabs are not simply pieces of cloth that we wear on our heads but rather they are part of our identity, our self image and our connection to God.

Our school has been made aware of this unjust rule by numerous students yet are still unwilling to even listen let alone make change. They are always making excuses for their potential reasons for why this rule was put in place but none of these reasons are rational or consistent. These reasons include:

  • The school claims that we should all look the same yet they would never dictate how students should style their hair so why are they allowed to tell us how to wear our hijabs.
  • They also claim that the wrap around hijabs are a "health and safety risk" which makes no sense as almost every other school permits them. Also, the Senior Prefects in our school are allowed to wear wrap around hijabs so unless they are somehow immune to all health hazards, I'm unable to understand why the rules wouldn't apply to them.

Clearly, there are no valid reasons for this rule being in place and it is just a way to control us. None of these excuses are justifiable as even predominantly non-muslim schools do not have this rule in place and seeing that we have such a large Muslim population in our school, you would think that they would be more respectful towards our beliefs.

On several occasions, the school has put students in isolation (internal) for wearing the wrap-around hijabs which is immoral as they are simply practising their religion in a way they see fitting.

They are most definitely not oblivious to the very prominent negative effects of these restrictive and oppressing rules so the fact that they are choosing to ignore this shows that they do not care about our self-esteem.

We have been advised by the authority figures in our school to make changes in the "right way" so let's see if they will listen to this more "mature" approach.

Please sign this petition so that we can actually make a change and we are allowed to wear the hijabs of our choice. I would also be appreciative if you shared this with whoever you can!
