Change The Dress Code To Make It Fair
Why this petition matters
Being dress coded has a bigger impact on a student than some people might think. Many people in our generation suffer from poor body image, low self-esteem, severe insecurities, and worse conditions. Comments that have been made only make you focus on your insecurities. If someone that struggles with any of these issues starts to feel good about themselves, they might choose to wear the crop top they cried looking at on themselves previously. When they arrive at school, they’re immediately told to cover up. Not only is being told to cover up more distracting to a student’s learning than the outfit itself, but it’s become increasingly more protested because of these reasons.
Cropped clothing has become increasingly more popular. You can’t walk into a store without seeing at least a few. Walmart, Target, Kohls, the mall… There are stores that dedicate their clothing just to crop tops, ripped jeans, etc. They make money that way because that’s what kids are interested in. A lot of clothing options, especially in-store, are clothing that goes against our dress code.
Crop tops, cut offs, and similar clothing is the new normal for our generation. Students aren’t generally distracted because they’re used to seeing it every day. Teens see each other in swimsuits etc every day of the summer, so technically speaking, it’s the staff that are distracted. Considering this, it’s considered weird and kind of creepy to most students. The fact that adults are the only people with this issue is more distracting than someone's bra strap hanging out.
A lot of the clothing choices of the students have to do with their style, their expressions, their personality, and what they feel most comfortable with. Schools make it seem like it's the best place to express yourself, but student’s feel limited; they don’t find school fun anymore. Girls feel targeted. That is not okay.
