Why this petition matters

Started by Willem De Vries

The current BC flag: a pinnacle of mediocrity and a statement of those not British, not Columbian and certainly not of British Columbians. The flag itself is like a punch in the face to behold. Too much detail with nothing to catch one's eye; despite Canada severing ties with Britain in 1946, the BC flag introduced in 1960 still has the monument of days past.

This new flag is not only representative of the people and of the land we live on, but also is deserving of being flown and put alongside other provincial and territorial flags.

The tricolour base represents the blue oceans and river, the green being the vast greenery of forests and meadows all throughout British Columbia. The white on the top represents the snowcapped mountains with year-round glaciers and the natural climate of BC.

The white spirit bear in the middle is the provincial animal of BC, unique to our province. The blue streak above is the Stellars Jay, the provincial bird of BC, and opposite is the pink salmon, often regarded as the most important animal in BC. The alignment and yin-yang shape represent BC's people's interconnected and interdependent nature and history.

Help make the change for a better BC.
