Why this petition matters

Started by Finn Bennett

The current white street lights are disruptive to not only the wildlife in Seattle but also to us residents. By changing the lights to a warmer color, we can help improve the city's air pollution. We could actually be able to see stars!, (on nights when the weather is actually kind of nice, that is). The city will be replacing the current lights with a warmer white light as the current ones die out, but that's not enough. We need, for both the city's biodiversity and our sleep, the lights to be an even warmer color, like orange or even red for the optimal benefits. Blue light affects the production of melatonin in our bodies making it much harder for our bodies to tell when it is time to go to sleep in addition to being overall more straining on the eyes than warmer colors. Animals, especially nocturnal ones, need low light condition to hunt, find food and light pollution can even hurt their ability to reproduce. While it may be true that some may not want more rabbits and coyotes in the city, the benefits to humans should outweigh that. Better sleep, better night vision for late bike rides, less eye strain, less chance to get cataracts, and eyes being able to stay moist? Yes please.
