Since June 14, 2018, ethnic Wolayta individuals are systematically being targeted, displaced, killed and evicted because of their ethnic identity at Hawassa in Southern region of Ethiopia.
The Southern Ethiopian Regional state is comprised of over 56 ethnic groups. Hawassa is the capital of Sothern Regional state. According to the 2007 Central Statically Authority, the population statistics indicates Wolayta as the second largest in terms of population in the region. Most Wolaytan’s migrate to different parts of Ethiopia to work and improve their lives economically. Hawassa being the capital; the Wolaytan’s migrated to the city and lived there for a century starting before a birth of Hawassa as a modern city. Most of Ethnic Wolaytan’s were born in the city, raised and made it their homes.
However, on June 14, 2018, Ethnic Wolayta have been singled out, targeted, tortured, killed, many are still internally displaced and under attack by ruling party leaders of Southern region of Ethiopia. The Southern Ethiopia People’s Democratic Movement (SEPDM) top politicians ordered a notorious gang member trained in a tactical way to capture kids and kill or burn alive any ethnic Wolaytan’s. These groups are directly supported by Southern Ethiopia People Democratic Movement (SEPDM) and operated under umbrella of Youth political Movements.
Many Ethnic Wolaytan’s are being targeted and discriminated at their workplace to resign from their positions within Hawassa region, forced by the Southern Ethiopia People’s Democratic
Movement (SEPDM) top officials. The government of Ethiopia has given deaf ears to the cry of Wolaytan’s who are being targeted, tortured, killed and internally displaced at Hawassa and the region.
The ‘June Massacre’, a mob massacre took place at Hawassa and the region. For instance, as many have circulated a video of ethnic Wolayta boy on social media; the 10 years old boy was burnt alive after spreading kerosene and video shocked many in Ethiopia and beyond. In another incident 11 years old was beaten to death by about 15 Sidama gang members in a cruel way.
While displaced and evicted, eighteen (18) mothers have given birth in a single room without physician assistance. Mothers and children were denied of medical assistance by SPDEM politicians strictly obedient to the Ethnic Sidama Oligarchy. The victims were spied and intimidated by the top politicians in the region to the extent of blocking their phone numbers. The situation has been deteriorating and the federal government has not been taking the situation as serious.
According to Ethiopian Constitution CHAPTER 3 PART ONE Article (14),“Every person has the inviolable right to life ….” Also, Article 3 (1) states that any Ethiopian has the freedom to live anywhere in the country. The inviolable right to life has been revoked by the old political oligarchs in the power. The government security forces never protected those children, mothers and burning of their properties. Those who were involved in the planning and killings of children were never brought to justice.
Acting as if supporting the new government of Ethiopia, the SEPDM top officials who are fully under control of the Sidama Oligarchy continued fueling the ethnic violence in the region against any ethnic Wolayta origin. The Ethiopian government regrouped those politicians from the last 27 years and given power to those who have committed atrocities.
The singling out Ethnic Wolayta continued and on August 22, 2018 at 2:00 a.m. ethnic Wolayta homes were targeted and children as well as mothers have been forcefully evicted out of their houses. Without prior notices, the city administrator arrived at the area exactly 2:00 a.m. at local time and forced children, and mothers from their deep sleep. The bulldozer razed, demolished the houses and property which has been built many years ago, but the Federal government has not given any briefing about the mater.
Ethnic Wolayta prisoners were also isolated in the Regional City Hawassa prison which is next to Alamura Mountain and targeted by the security forces and supported by Sidama ethnic tycoons. As one of prisoner inmate witnessed, the incident is still directed by “Adane Gingamo” Police commission Commissioner and the mob movement within the prison is supported by Ethnic Sidama tycoon (Zelalem Woldeamanuel) to attack the inmates. Reportedly, the prison inmate witnessed five ethnic Wolayta inmates were killed in completely shocking and heinous ways: having their heads busted by rock and their genitals mutilated alive. They were forced to cut body of each other and burn as a whole when others watching. The ultimate goal is to cover up the June 14, 2018 Massacre and send the message so that all Wolayta ethnic groups may leave Hawassa.
Many ethnic Wolaytan’s are still being targeted because of their identity and grave violation of human innate right. According to Universal Declaration of Human Rights Article 2: “Everyone is entitled to all the rights and freedoms…. without distinction of any kind, such as race, colour, sex, language, religion, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status. Furthermore, no distinction shall be made on the basis of the political, jurisdictional or international status of the country or territory to which a person belongs, whether it be independent, trust, non-self-governing or under any other limitation of sovereignty”.
Therefore, we as the Wolayta Yelagaa Activist members from Washington DC, USA to Johannesburg, South Africa DEMAND THE INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY TO PRESSURE AGAINST ETHIOPIAN GOVERNMENT THROUGH EVERY MEANS TO BRING THOSE INVOLVED IN FUELING THE ETHNIC VIOLENCE AND KILLINGS TO JUSTICE AT HAWASSA AND THE REGION.
