As a high school student, I know firsthand how draining and time-consuming homework is. Students already attend school 8 hours a day, 5 days a week. According to MVorganizing.org, high school students spend around 2.7 hours of homework each weeknight. This is an extra 13 and a half hours of schoolwork students are expected to complete each week, not including the 40 hours spent in the building per week as well. A student's 40 hour week is equivelent to a full time job in itself. This is more than expected from a full-time employee. Students have other things in their lives that need their time and energy as well. Examples include time for family, a job, time for themselves, social events or outings, and more. We need to consider that there are only 24 hours in a day: 8 hours are spent at school, 8 hours sleeping, and 3 doing homework. This leaves 6 hours remaining for a student to do what they choose. This is an unhealthy schedule for students. With less homework, kids will be able to focus on their mental health, jobs, extracurriculars, family, and friends in a more balanced way that supports who they want to become.
