Healthcare in prisons has deteriorated throughout the years, inmates have experienced numerous assaults throughout their jail time. Physical, sexual, and mental assaults are far too common in jails, the prisoners are treated like animals, desensitized of pain and suffering due to the experiences they face during their incarceration. With this petition, I hope to aid them with the implementation of cameras, hiring of reliable and non-bias guards, while providing mental assistance for those that need it. These solutions are the hope that prisoners need.

Physical assaults                                                                             This is considered one of the most common assaults due to 21% of male inmates being the victim of excessive force during a 6-month period. Many factors can cause the action of assaults: race, power, intimidation, and ctr. As previously stated, a solution that I suggest would be to hire new and improved guards, this implementation would reduce the amount of force being used and the act of chemical spraying inmates to harass them will no longer be an act of discipline.

Sexual assaults                                                                                  Victims of sexual assaults were treated terribly during their time in prison due to the prison being a toxic, sexualized environment that permits staff to sexually abuse and harass female inmates. To combat this problem, I would like prison officials to place cameras and other devices in dark corners where guards are most likely to sexually assault females. With these cameras and their data, we have proof of the assaults and can properly reprehend their role in prison, and place charges against them.

Mental assaults                                                                                     It was proven that many inmates have undergone isolation treatment which has terribly reduced their mental state. With that, many of them gained mental issues and have relied on substances to calm themselves. Specifically, 72% of prisoners that have mental issues rely on substance abuse. Sadly, studies have shown that there are approximately 10 times more prisoners with mental disorders than in mental hospitals. A solution that will greatly decrease the number of prisoners with mental disorders will to create a mental rehabilitation center in all prisons, these prisoners will be able to gain back their sanity and humanity.

In addition to these solutions, most of the problems regarding the assaults will be properly resolved. In many ways, I find society to be flawed. Freedom is granted to citizens of the U.S. but incarceration diminishes the freedom for inmates. Many are raped, beaten, and even murdered throughout their time in jail. I want to create a comfortable and calming environment for prisoners to assist them in reforming.

Many organizations are currently trying to combat these assaults. Specifically, the National Commission of Correctional Health Care (NCCHC) and the Community Orientated Correctional Health Services (COCHC).
