Why this petition matters

Started by Tarnetta Dansby

In a time where injustice and inequality is being highlighted and put on the forefront, it is imperative not to forget the thousands of innocent African American males being wrongfully imprisoned. Taken away from their families and being stripped of their freedom based on little to no evidence. And sometimes based on the testimony of someone who is in a desperate situation and is willing to falsely accuse anyone to shorten their sentence.

Dorian Brooks was recently arrested and charged with a murder from 1989 that he did not commit.  This arrest was not made from any actual  evidence. It was made from the testimony of someone who was trying to reduce their sentence. The inequality that he is currently facing is egregious. He’s been sitting in federal custody for over a year now. Separated from his family, and prohibited from doing the positive work he was doing in the community.

Our justice system says that you are innocent until proven guilty. For some that might be true but in the case of Mr. Brooks, he seems to be guilty until proven innocent.  That is a huge injustice and a violation of what the law stands for. He’s done nothing but promote change and redemption in his time on the street. He’s written a published book titled Convicted at Birth, spoken at some of the most prestigious colleges in the country, and has tried to use his own life to steer the youth in the right direction. He’s worked as a youth counselor supervisor at organizations like S.N.U.G where he monitored and developed work skills for the youth and young adults.

Mr. Brooks is not discrediting the poor choices he’s made in his life. But this current situation in no way shape or form one of them. Mr. Brooks and the people that support him and know the positive impact he had in his community, are asking that you sign this petition asking for his release from federal prison.
