Dear Change-maker,

While we have almost won the fight against a global pandemic, we collectively need to win another crucial fight, against the pay disparity basing on the caste, class and gender.

Dear Friends/Colleagues/Fellow Countrymen, why do employers need to know my previous salary before hiring me for a job in their organisation?

A practice like this should not exist in any country that promotes values of democracy and non discrimination. Many states in the USA have already banned this practice. However world’s largest democracy is still allowing its employers to negotiate potential candidates’ salary as per their last drawn salary.

Unfortunately, salary history have been used to justify a lot of bad practices throughout the employment industry. For example:

1- If I am underpaid in my current job the chances are higher that I will be underpaid in my future job as well,
2- It gives power to the employers to negotiate my pay not basis my qualifications or worth rather paying me basis my salary history, which is unfair!!

3- Amongst candidates that were not in the position to negotiate their salaries in the past because of their social, economic, gender or other reasons, chances are higher that they will remain in the same exploitative circle if they disclose their salary history

Employers use salary histories to intensify ongoing pay discrimination. It’s illegal to pay people differently based on their gender, caste or class, but because this practice exists, employers now justify salary discrepancies amongst candidates using past salaries as a justification.

So please let us all demand an equal opportunity from our employers by not letting them ask about our last pay details and allowing us to negotiate our salaries basis our qualifications and let us all build a world which is more egalitarian and just in nature.
