The petition started by Jessica Luther Rummel targeting Bellevue Marshal Nate Silvester is outside the realm of her control or power. She wants to take down the GoFundMe and is threatening the company by saying that, if they don't comply, she will find another platform to donate through, which is big talk for her 3,000 followers (versus Nate's 339,000). Her petition is not only misleading and harmful, but blatantly libelous. Her posted content was intentionally edited to mislead patrons into believing that Officer Silvester is a racist murderer. Neither of those things are true of this cop who, like so many others, puts his life on the line every day to serve and protect.
Ms. Rummel may not like what this cop, or his thousands of supporters, stand for and believe in. The great thing about America is that she doesn't have to. However, she cannot infringe on others' rights to freedom of speech and support for each other. The GoFundMe page doesn't have a message of hate, racism, or extremism. It's a cause for underrepresented law enforcement officers who have the hardest job in America right now.
Ms. Rummel can either take down her petition, or face a libel lawsuit.
