Why this petition matters

New Zealand Labour government has a policy that stops New Zealand from recognizing West Papua's right to self determination. Indonesia is stripping away West Papua's human rights and abusing their independency. New Zealand does not want to get involved with the internal issues between West Papua and Indonesia because New Zealand trades with Indonesia and they have a political and military relationship. New Zealand has a policy of non - interventionism this means that NZ believes that one country should not interfere with another country internal politics.

Indonesia colonized and forcefully occupy West Papuan since 1963 with use of Indonesian military forces. Those military forces have raped, tortured, murder, and wrongfully arrested hundreds of thousands of West Papuans. Those who resisted Indonesian rule were murdered, arrested, or threatened. Over 500,000 West Papuans have been murdered. Indonesia also rigged West Papua's "Act of Free Choice" by handpicking a few Papuan individuals and intimidated them into voting against it instead of letting Papuans freely vote. West Papua are still fighting to gain self-determination and free Indonesia from Indonesian colonization. https://www.freewestpapua.org/info/

New Zealand publicly supporting West Papua and shaming Indonesia for their actions would help other international countries recognize West Papua issue and gain International support. This would hopefully lead to West Papua gaining their human rights back as well as self-governance.
