Change Mental Health Support Systems in High Schools

Change Mental Health Support Systems in High Schools
Why this petition matters
The Problem-
Mental health problems such as depression, anxiety, and eating disorders are becoming more common among teenagers and part of the reason is that it’s often ignored. Mental problems are talked about very little at schools and although schools claim ‘they care’ they offer very little support that is effectively fixing the problem, in fact, the pressure at school to achieve high levels of academic success overrides the joys of education causing kids to because anxious and depressed. 75% of mental health problems start before the age of 18 (in high school) therefore schools need to make mental health a priority and provide effective support. Mental health is a serious issue, and if ignored may lead to destructive behavior such as self-harm or even suicide which is currently the leading cause of death for this age group. This needs to be fixed
The Solution-
- Mental health added to the curriculum for ALL year levels covering topics such as eating disorders, depression, anxiety, self-harm, and suicide. How to help if you know someone is struggling, how to reach out for help, and healthy coping mechanisms will also be included.
- A compulsory workshop will be taken once a year to learn about ways you can get help, how to deal with stress from school, and how to help others who are struggling.
- A limit to how much homework and tests to reduce stress and ensure a realistic workload
- Checkups done on each student twice a year to make sure everything is ok
