Change Louisiana Slavery

Change Louisiana Slavery
Why this petition matters
During the 2022 Legislative Session, State Representative Edmond Jordan proposed House Bill 298 to Amend the Louisiana Constitution in regards to involuntary prison labor. Although it has taken far too long for the issue of slavery to reach the Louisiana Ballot, Representative Jordan is now rightfully asking the public to vote no on the amendment. As it reads the ballot question would prohibit the use of involuntary servitude except as it applies to the lawful administration of the criminal justice system. Courts have the authority to interpret this language to allow for involuntary labor even before a person is convicted of a crime. Although Representative Jordan is asking the public to vote no on this amendment, we do not want the progress that has been made to be lost during the next Legislative Session. Sign this petition to let our legislators know that regardless of the outcome of LA Constitutional Amendment No. 7, citizens care, are engaged in, and want to prohibit modern day slavery in our state. If not, come the next Legislative Session, congressmen/women may use this vote as a measure of constituent interest in the issue to prolong change of involuntary servitude laws. Sign this petition to help put an end to modern day slavery!
