Why this petition matters
Started by Thomas MacGregor
There are a lot of misconceptions about Christopher Columbus. Columbus was one of the biggest slave owners and traders of his time. He used these innocent people for excruciating labor, and to trade for resources. He also did not discover America. He intended to find a westward route to Asia but miscalculated his approach and ended up landing in Guanahani (now the Bahamas). Even if it was just a mistake, Vikings were actually the first non-native people to land in America. If this wasn't enough, there were already Natives on American soil.
Columbus enslaved and murdered the people of the land. This should not be his holiday, it should be about the people who created the first civilizations of this land.
