The current CMS bell schedules are causing problems for teachers, children, and parents. The 4:15 dismissal times are too late for students and the 7 hour day is too long for elementary children.  After school activities are limited, time for homework is reduced, teachers are working the equivalent of an extra month with no pay, and most importantly, children do not have time to be kids.  Some students are getting on buses before 6:00am while others return home after 5:30pm.  There are major negative impacts on staff, children and families.  Please do what is best for our children and institute age appropriate bell schedules.

Change the CMS Bell Schedules

The late bell schedules are causing problems for teachers, children, and parents. The 4:15 dismissal is too late for all students and the day is too long for elementary chlldren. After school activities are limited, time for homework is reduced, teachers are working the equivalent of an extra month with no pay, and most importantly, children don't have time to be kids. Some students are getting on buses before 7:00am while others return home after 5:30pm. This was done to save $4 million dollars. The negative impacts for staff, families and children are not worth it. No school should begin before 7:15am or end after 3:45pm.

For parents new to CMS, last year the elementary school day was extended to 7 hours and the late bell schedule (9:15 to 4:15) was implemented at 33 middle and elementary schools. You can find all current schedules at www.cms.k12.nc.us.
