The ambitious multi crore project of building Smart Cities and seeing it as a reality is a common man's dream. The central government started to roll out this plan in the year 2015 for several cities across multiple states in India. The Smart City plan aims to address key improvizations and modernization in multiple aspects in the identified cities.
The citizens will benefit from significant improvements in air quality, decongestion, improvement in water quality, walking conditions, sewage treatment and management, underground cabling, Effective usage of Information technology, healthcare improvements, education, the creation of renewable energy, waste management, water preservation, digitization of services and much more!
Imagine if these are implemented using modern technology effectively. The cities will be renewed and refreshed.
But…this can be a reality if the projects are run by experienced and capable leaders in the field of Urban planning. Imagine taking a life critical project and giving it to Else, the result is obvious. It will be nothing short of a disaster and a big loot.
Well, that is what is happening in Coimbatore. The Chief executive officer(CEO) R. Suganya 28 years old, (daughter of former AIADMK MLA Mr.KP Raju) who has hardly any experience in handling urban governance project with an little over 3 years of experience in the HR industry and in a hospital, is now appointed as the CEO of the agency which is going to handle the ambitious multi crore Smart City project and will be puppeteering with the future of the city.
The initial requirement for the position needed was 15 years of experience of which 5 years should be in the Urban sector, later it was reduced to 3 years of including 2 years in the Urban sector. This sounds like was done to get R. Suganya into the selection criteria.
How effective will the implementation of the Smart City project be if a person with no experience in Urban sector end up?
The once in a life time chance of bringing in positive change to the city of Coimbatore goes to dust and people who helped get an inexperienced person like R. Suganya will have trump victory by pocketing the huge amounts of money that is allocated to these projects.
Let us stop this ineffective appointment of an incompetent person and ask for a change to have the person with proven experience in Urban planning and implementation.
This could also pave the way for similar selection of CEOs for the next set of Smart cities chosen which are - Salem, Tiruchirapalli and Madurai!
