Why this petition matters

I understand that obesity is a big issue in the UK, but putting calories on menus is not going to fix it and will possibly cause other issues which will cost money for the NHS too.

The government should be educating people on balanced diets. Calories don’t necessarily mean anything, like a healthier food could have more calories in than an unhealthier food purely because of the amount of monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats in them - which are both healthy and good for your cholesterol, heart and overall health.

For example, a handful of nuts or even an avocado will have more calories in than a bar of chocolate, but nuts and avocados have a higher nutritional value than chocolate.

They could also start something to encourage people in the UK to not only eat a healthy and balanced diet, but also to get outside and exercise more. There are so many better things that can be put in place in order to help the obesity in the UK without having a knock on effect, and causing people to have a negative view on food and calories. Food is more than just a number.

There are a great deal of people suffering from eating disorders in the UK, and putting calories on menus is going to be very triggering for them. Eating disorders not only include Anorexia Nervosa, but also Bulimia Nervosa, Binge Eating Disorder, OSFED, ARFED and so many more. All of them are serious and many sufferers in all of them will be greatly affected by this change.

People go out to enjoy a meal; whether they are dieting or not. No one who is dieting in a healthy mindset will be tracking while they are trying to enjoy a nice meal out with family or friends. This change could put people in the situation where they think the lower calorie food they get, the healthier it is - and this is not true at all. It’s an unhealthy mindset to be in.

There are so many alternatives that could have been done which will help people lead healthier lifestyles and in a healthy mindset. Calories could still be accessible in restaurants, but not put directly in front of vulnerable people.
