Bakersfield College is undergoing a transformation, taking the lead in many areas and being recognized at the state and national levels.  The primary cause for the transformation is the leadership of its president, Sonya Christian.  Unfortunately, in a special meeting July 31, 2015, the Kern Community College District Board of Trustees voted 6 to 1 not to renew the BC President’s contract.

The situation continues.  At a packed Board of Trustees meeting on August 13, many community members spoke of their positive experiences with BC under the leadership of Sonya Christian.  After a lengthy closed session, the Board of Trustees directed the Chancellor, Sandra Serrano, to negotiate a contract with the BC President.

President Christian’s tenure will end on February 3, 2016 if she is not offered a contract.  In the meantime, Bakersfield College faculty, staff and students are left in limbo – uncertain of our future and unable to move forward with confidence that our leader will be at the helm to guide our important work.  Ultimately, the greater Kern County community will suffer if the Chancellor and the Board choose not to capitalize on BC’s momentum by offering Dr. Christian a fair contract.

We cannot let the matter rest until the BC President has a signed contract comparable in length to the other district college presidents and commensurate with the responsibilities for a complex institution that is larger than the other KCCD colleges combined.

We, the undersigned, demand a contract of comparable length and commensurate with the responsibility of leading Bakersfield College for President Sonya Christian.  We expect the Board to vote on this matter at the September 11 Board Meeting.
