Opening 5 vs 5 basketball in Rec Center
At the beginning of the semester, students experienced 3 days of a completely open rec center indoor basketball court. However, in less then a week it was taken away from the students, despite the best effort from the students to fully abiding by the mask mandate while playing full court, competitive basketball. Students had the privilege of playing full court stripped from them with no return in sight. Despite the school shutting down basketball, they failed on setting real restrictions on the indoor dining halls, classrooms, and every other indoor setting on campus. The students are having a tough time finding other things to do with the lack of effort from the university to provide on campus activities for students free time, and taking basketball was one of the most popular activities on campus for many students. The students want to be heard while exposing the university for their inability to accommodate to different student’s needs. Basketball not only is a great physical activity but it also helps students build friendships that will last for their entire college career. Not only on the indoor court but the university has also put no effort to put the rims up on the outdoor basketball courts, which New Hanover county has no mandates for outdoor activities.
