Black Tar Heels started this petition to Chancellor Kevin Guskiewicz and

African-American alumni of The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill are quite distressed that there has never been a Black head coach of a major athletic team at UNC, in spite of the contributions of our athletes to the University, and the fact that many other ACC schools have had African-American head coaches.

Dean Smith brought Charlie Scott to UNC as the first Black scholarship athlete in the ACC in 1966.  So it’s past time for the first African-American permanent head coach of a revenue sport for the UNC Chapel Hill Tar Heels to be hired and appropriate for that hire to be the head coach of the basketball team.

We are lucky enough to have capable options within the Dean Smith/Roy Williams lineage who are Black, e.g., Hubert Davis or Jerry Stackhouse or King Rice, etc.  Luck, of course, is the confluence of opportunity and preparation, and these gentlemen certainly have the preparation for this opportunity.

Since Scott, African-Americans have led on the court and off, but representation among leaders in the program is an important part of equity and inclusion and says to former player, current players, future players, alums, current students, faculty, staff and other stakeholders at the University that the inertia that supports institutional racism won’t always stand. So it is time to see a Black coach lead the men’s basketball program at one of the iconic college basketball programs in the nation.  WE WANT TO SEE THAT HAPPEN NOW!!!
