Save Garrison Elementary from consolidation.
On behalf of Ann McLeod, Garrison PTA and school community:
Garrison Elementary School is the heart of the Logan Circle Neighborhood in Washington, DC, and sits on the border between wards 1 and 2. Logan Circle is one of the fastest growing neighborhoods in the city and in the entire United States and the U Street Neighborhood to its north is one of the most diverse and densely populated areas of the city. Garrison draws 60% of its student population from wards 1 and 2 and it is already well past the tipping point to being a true neighborhood school.
In the past three years, parents have re-established a PTA, developed strong partnerships with local community organizations, reached out to prospective parents and worked with the administration to improve the school. Under the leadership of a dynamic new principal just appointed this year, Garrison's teachers and staff strongly connect with and support their students. They have been successful in increasing test scores, and creating a fun and challenging academic environment. Current parents are active at the school, as are parents whose children are not yet school-age, and community members from the neighborhood and city at large. With essential elements now finally in place, thanks to 3 years of hard work led by parents and community members, parents living in the District have identified Garrison as a school they want to send their child to, rather than apply in the out-of-boundary lottery or navigate Public Charter Schools. DCPS has proposed to close Garrison, a real neighborhood school with a lot of momentum, passion, and family and community engagement.
Please join the campaign to keep Garrison open. Give your best reasons why DCPS should join forces with parents and the community and commit to helping make Garrison the next DCPS neighborhood school success story rather than destroy what the community has built.
