Every school deserves a great principal. Great schools deserve great principals. And so does Brooklyn Tech, the largest traditional public high school in America, with roughly 6,000 students and a total stakeholder population of nearly 20,000. It's ranked #82 best U.S. high school even though 61% of its students experience poverty and 77% are students of color.

In NYC, principals are selected by an easily manipulated process that often quietly eliminates qualified candidates from the selection process, stacking the deck for candidates favored by faceless bureaucrats. When this happened at Brooklyn Tech on October 29, the parent leadership walked out of the interview process in protest, since the school community was “deprived of their right to have the best possible Principal.” Click here for the Chalkbeat story. Click here for the NY1 story.

Please sign our petition if you care about leadership excellence for the 1 million students in the NYC public school system.

Unfortunately, in NYC the only way to achieve change is through protest and petition. This worked at Townsend Harris High School and LaGuardia High School. At stake is a crown jewel of the NYC public schools, threatened by leadership lapses including unfilled key supervisor slots and available but untapped funding sources. Today, this creates a ripple effect of frustration from students to parents to faculty that the right Principal can reverse.

As anyone who has led an organization or worked for a capable leader, the person at the top means everything to that organization's success. This is true of Principals, who run the process to choose capable Assistant Principals, ensure smooth operations, adequate financial and human resources. Most important, Principals are responsible for setting a vision in collaboration with the school's stakeholders.

I am a Brooklyn Tech parent, the Chair of its School Leadership Team, and a donor. Like many of its families, my parents immigrated from Korea and education was the path to the American Dream. I see this same dream in the eyes of my fellow parents and in the students and want the best for them. Extraordinary teachers and administrators played a critical role in my life and I see them at Brooklyn Tech. Now, they need the great Principal they deserve.

Please sign our petition if you care about leadership excellence for the 1 million students at Brooklyn Tech and in the NYC public school system.

When you sign our petition, you are co-signing the letter to NYC DOE Chancellor Carranza from Lisa Sullivan and Cindy Kue, Parent Association Co-Chairs, and me as Chair of the School Leadership Team.

Please add a comment sharing why you care.
