Maintain Albany Crossing Guards!

Albany children are at risk crossing busy streets to get to school. Having at least six crossing guards to cover the most trafficked intersections gives them the minimal level of safety they deserve. Without the traditional contribution by the University, the City of Albany can only afford to maintain three crossing guards, which will result in many students crossing our busiest streets unprotected--a truly dangerous situation.
The Albany community greatly appreciates the values, intelligence, respect for education, and diversity that University Village in Albany brings to our city. But the University's status as a tax-free entity means that the more than 250 children living in University Village are educated by our small community of 18,000 through our tax dollars. These children attend every single Albany school, in every part of the city. It is fair, just, and proper that the University contribute to support Albany schools.
Please reconsider your decision to stop funding the crossing guard program. University of California, Berkeley, and Albany have a joint interest in protecting students and fostering their education. Let us work together toward that goal, beginning with maintaining or expanding the crossing guard program.
