Reinstate Deb Fisher

Deb Fisher is an amazingly talented and dedicated Occupational Therapist who works with students at the Manhattan School for Children, a public community school in NYC with a one-of-a-kind specialized inclusion program for children with severe motor disabilities. Deb cares deeply about the children she works with and works tirelessly and creatively on their behalf. Last year, she even helped form a non-profit to support a very talented young boy in his effort to write his own book. (http://thisabilitynotdisability.org/) Incredibly, instead of appaulding Deb's work, the DOE suspended her without pay for 30 school days because she sent out an email during the school day about the non-profit. This action not only punishes Deb, but also punishes the many children she has worked so closely with as they have lost their talented and beloved therapist. The DOE punished Deb for caring too much, punishing excellence.
There is a new administration in the city and at the DOE -- one that supposedly supports and cares about students with disabilities, particularly in creative specialized programs like Manhattan School for Children. But their actions speak louder than their words. Despite receiving many letters from parents who were outraged by the situation with Deb and two editorials calling them out for this abuse (http://www.nytimes.com/2014/10/03/nyregion/bureaucracy-turns-a-hero-into-a-rogue.html?_r=0and http://www.nydailynews.com/opinion/editorial-wrong-article-1.1962776) the DOE has remained silent and hasn't taken any action to reverse this ridiculous disciplinary ruling.
Speak up for Deb! Tell Chancellor Carmen Farina and Mayor Bill DeBlasio that we want to support therapists and teachers who care about students, not punish them! Reinstate Deb Fisher in her position now! Let our children have their amazing therapist back.
