Europe's values are non-negotiable. Don’t accept blackmailing from Poland and Hungary!

Partial success for Europe's values - thanks to your help!

Angela Merkel did NOT give in at the EU summit in December. Europe's leaders unanimously agreed on a mechanism to protect the rule of law. Poland and Hungary have given up their veto. The European Parliament approved the whole package just before Christmas with a clear majority. This is a success! Thank you for contributing to this with your signatures! However, there is also one drawback: the EU Commission was asked not to trigger the mechanism until the European Court of Justice reviewed it. This may delay the application by one or two years. Europe's rule of law is in crisis - especially in the current situation, a delayed implementation of the rule of law mechanism is not acceptable. The Commission must not accept to be condemned to inaction by the Member States when the independence of the judiciary is abolished in Poland. Or when billions of EU funds end up with Orban's family and friends. The new rule of law mechanism is in force since 1 January 2021! In the coming weeks, the European Parliament will campaign for the EU Commission to implement the rule of law mechanism as soon as possible. Grace periods of several months for some Member States are simply not included in the legal text. Applicable law cannot simply be paused while it is reviewed by the ECJ. We in the Parliament will at every opportunity call on the EU Commission to use the mechanism. Until it does so, it must also use all other means to sanction rule of law breakers. Many greetings from the European Parliament  Daniel Freund, Sven Giegold, Franziska Brantner
