Hi everyone & to Whom it May Concern,

It has come to my and many of my peers attention, that the  Rutgers football team will be allowing fans in the stadium on May 20, 2021, as indicated in emails received from the school to the students. May 20, 2021, is three days after the MSW graduation ,which we were denied to have in-person and now will only have a ceremony done by zoom. From our knowledge, Rutgers is allowing 5,000 fans to attend the game meanwhile there are only 600 (maybe a little more) master students in this program, which means if each student attends and each student was allowed to bring 4 or even 2 people we still would have less than what the football team is allowing. We understand the importance RU football team and all sports at this school, however, it makes many of us feel as if Rutgers is  prioritizing athletics over  our academic achievements. We chose Rutgers University for their academic program, not their sports program. We attend Rutgers School of Social Work to gain knowledge about empathy, research, advocating, policy,  how to help others, and so much more! We just want to be able to celebrate this accomplishment with our loved ones in person.

Therefore, we are asking for Rutgers to reconsider an online ceremony and allowing us to have a ceremony in person regardless of the date in the summer with masks and social distancing of course. It is extremely unfair that we see schools like Princeton University, Monmouth University, Georgian Court, William Patterson, TCNJ, Kean University, Montclair, Ramapo, Rowan, and Seton Hall holding an in person graduation for their students (even if it means waiting until June/ July). While Rutgers is a top college that we are all so proud to be graduating from is not allowing us to have a traditional ceremony. It's extremely disappointing and disheartening that after the dedication, time, money, and years we put into our education , that we cannot celebrate in person with our family and friends. Additionally, many parents and significant others are unable to take off work due to it being a zoom ceremony in the middle of the afternoon. Secondly, it's disappointing to not be able to celebrate with our fellow peers and lastly, not to be able to celebrate one of our proudest moments traditionally.

Again, I am asking with my fellow peers, for Rutgers University School of Social Work to reconsider online graduation and allow us to attend an in-person ceremony. We have worked so hard for this moment that we deserve to walk across the big stage one last time with our family and friends present. Even if we are allowed two family members and have a live stream for the rest, we will accept it. We are graduating with a degree that has taught us to advocate for ourselves and others and that is what we are doing right now- we want our voices heard.

"From far and near we came to Rutgers, And resolved to learn all that we can;
And so we settled down, in that noisy college town, On the banks of the old Raritan."

So much was taken away from us, so as our school song says, we settled down, which we did , we stayed virtual with no complaints,  learn all that we can , learning virtual is never easy, but we managed, in that noisy college town, that we were unable to experience. So let us hear that noisy college town one last time, before we say goodbye!
