During this pandemic, Chaminade University decided to switch to online classes mid semester for the remainder of the spring. Chaminade is home to a diverse student body, where students come from all over the world to attend. This switch, while protecting our health, has added a great deal of stress to the student body. Many students have decided to go home at the requests of their family, causing them to uproot their lives and belongings last minute and deal with the stresses of traveling. With our students returning home, that contributes to the difficulty of online classes. The time zone change from Hawaii can range anywhere between 1 to 19 hours for students, making it a very difficult adjustment mid semester. In addition, many students struggle with learning online, which is why they chose to go to an on-campus university and take in-person courses. Teachers are also unprepared for this switch, as some have decided to just post assignments and grades, and no content or lectures to help. Switching to online classes, something completely out of our control, created a hindrance to the academic performance of the student body. Further, with students returning home, they are able to see first hand the economic and health stress that their families and they themselves are facing. With all of these factors, it is unfair to continue to grade students by the current grading scale. Duke University, University of Wisconsin-Madison, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and the University of Mary Washington are some of the many Universities that have decided to change their grading system to pass/fail to accommodate their students, and it is only fair that Chaminade University does the same.
