Getting all public elementary aged children to school safely

The recent decision by the Martin County School Board to phase out buses for elementary school children jeopardizes safety as well as access to education for hundreds of children. We cannot reasonably expect children as young as five years of age to safely cross US1/Federal Highway with no crossing guards or adult supervision. The Martin County Sheriff has explained that he will not post his staff on this road because of the hazards that it presents to their safety. In addition, elementary school aged children in other parts of the county will be expected to cross railroad tracks, busy roadways with high speed traffic, roads with no sidewalks and more to get to school. This problem has extreme impact on many lower income and minority communities where the children are already faced with many challenges in staying on grade level. Education, futures, and lives are at risk. We need to keep bus service for these communities. We owe all students safe access to quality education.
