Frederick Douglass Foundation of Maryland started this petition to Chairman of the County Council

In Anne Arundel County, we have a diverse population and a political spectrum which spans from the left to right extremes. Yet, through that we strive to keep the spirit of unity and open, honest political discourse. The diversity of our county is unquestioned. We have a rural southern county, an Eastern Shore Gateway Peninsula (or two), Baltimore Suburbs, 2 major military bases, NSA headquarters and the State Capital all within our borders. This diversity is dispersed among 7 represented districts that have historically been cleanly cut. Our geographic diversity is rivaled only by our robust ideological diversity. This is best reflected by the fluid political history of Anne Arundel County.

Recently, we have observed that hyper-partisanship is undermining the quality of debate and discourse in the Anne Arundel County Council. We cannot ignore the influence of the disruption and viciousness we see in DC. Perhaps we set too high an expectation for our local representatives. We dare not understate the demands placed on our county council. We expect them to keep taxes down and quality of services up. We jealously guard our personal freedom and individual sovereignty while demanding the government keep our neighbors in check. It is no wonder that there is such a strong temptation to hide behind partisan barriers.

Despite the challenges before our county council we do not believe it is unreasonable to expect our elected officials to work together for our unified community. We expect our County Council to rise above the obstacles to show that Anne Arundel County is NOTHING like DC. With the help of our council, we can prove the strength of a healthy balance between left and right.

We can clearly see the conservative areas of Pasadena, Broadneck/Severna Park and Southern, while the 95 Corridor is progressive as the Baltimore Suburbs, and Crofton and central are very moderate. We are the political diversity that represents most of America. When we show we can work together, it can give us hope for America as a whole.

Our Council members, regardless of their district are symbolic of the strength within our community. We need them to represent us in unity. Division between them, encourages division between us. We call on them to make concessions to each other for the overall good of our unified community. This is not a legislature of 500+ people. It is 7 representatives and an executive working to make our county “The Best Place”. We strongly urge consensus from the 7 good-hearted people who are genuinely looking out for the best interests of Anne Arundel County.
